Ontario’s Strategy to End Human Trafficking Initiative

In June 2016, Ontario launched its Strategy to End Human Trafficking (HT) Initiative and announced its plan to invest up to $72 million over four years to implement a multi-ministry strategy aimed at increasing awareness and coordination, enhancing justice-sector initiatives and improving survivors’ access to services.

Part of its Prevention and Community Supports included an expansion of the Victim Quick Response Program (VQRP) and enhancement of the Victims Crisis Assistance Program (VCAO). As a result, in late September 2016, 47 Victim Services agencies in Ontario were advised by the Ministry of the Attorney General of funds being made available for this initiative.

Victim Services of Peel (VSOP) has received a portion of this HT Initiative funding and has been working closely with victims of human trafficking to prevent re-victimization by ensuring victims have the supports and services in place that they need to move forward and live their lives free from abuse. This includes VQRP-HT to address the complexity and multi-faceted needs of HT victims and to also provide financial assistance with essential expenses in order to lessen the impact of the crime, enhance safety and meet practical needs.

VSOP is also a member of the Peel Region HT Service Providers Committee, a collaborative initiative between law enforcement and community organizations to address the problem of sex trafficking and coordinate supports for the survivors of the growing criminal trade in the Region of Peel and the Greater Toronto Area. It is headed up by Constable Joy Brown of Peel Regional Police, and over 30 community agencies are represented. The committee launched an awareness campaign earlier this year and various materials have been circulated in the region including this poster “Are You The One…”.
